No matter how you slice it -- the car is 12 model years old.

Better to get one with a few more miles and five years newer.

They only cost 26k new? I bought mine one year old with 10k for 22.5 -- certified with a three year warranty.

Agree. I don't know what the infatuation is over cars with low miles even they are over a decade old. (unless the car is a rare antique). If you just want a beater, buy something high mileage for 5grand or less that's still reliable and will give you a few more years of use. You'll get your money's worth.

But if you want to spend some money, go for the newest model car with the latest technology within your price range. Cars are just that, technology, just like computers are technology. Every year technology changes, electronics are updated, engines have more hp with greater fuel economy. Would you be swooning to buy a 10 year old outdated Windows 2000 PC with only 512 mb of ram just because it was slightly used and has "low mileage"? Doubt it.

That's one heck of a deal. My first car though, was 1995, I purchased it for $6,000 back in 2005, it had 23,238 miles on it when I bought it. I sold it when it hit 62,000 miles after 5 years of owning it.

Comparing a car to a computer is not apples to apples. Plus this generation of Lexus is known for its reliability, an example with 31,000 miles is almost as good as anything you can buy today IMO. And look at the asking price, a year 2000 ES300 is going for the same price as a 2007 Hyundai, that says something.

I wouldn't pay 12 grand for the car, but with some negotiating it would be an excellent buy.

I wouldn't pay that, but explain how sub-100k IS300's in good shape can still fetch upwards of 8-9k?

Its a Lexus - those that know what they're looking at know what they're worth and willing to pay that, since they hold value. For the money they're looking to get its 2-3 year old civic money - but again which would you want?

You're absolutely right about that.

This car is identical to mine (model year 2001) except for the color and mine has a matching woodgrain steering wheel. Looking at the rear lights, I think it has to be a model year 2001 and not 2000. They must have made a mistake on the model year. Do you agree? 2000 has yellow color for the turn signal and 2001 has no yellow and has white band straight across (like mine).

ooo i dont think so ..the yellow colour turn signal are for 1999 and below models(they white band straight across AND gives a yellow colour when they are turned on)...but for 2000 and 2001 year ES300 the tail lights turn signals are same . i.e. they have a white band straight across. AND when the light blinks it gives out yellow colour.
So 2000 and 2001 (above) models are identical looking in pretty much every aspect

So if the brand is known for reliability, why would you pay an extra $5,000 to get one with 31,000 miles as opposed to 100,000 miles if they are known to run to 300k miles easily problem free? Most likely in both situations, the car will be gone past it's use before it reaches such high mileage anyway. Unless someone abnormally drives 20,000 miles each year for 10 years straight on a 100,000 mile car, which gets you to 300k.

Depends what you look for in a car and how long you plan to keep it. A low mileage car will likely have leather in better condition, overall better interior, less door dings, better paint, obviously less wear on the suspension and drivetrain.

I bought my car with 36,000 miles, It is doubtful a car with 100K+ on it would be in the near showroom condition my car is in, and I was willing to pay more to get it.

:

it doesn't have the much desirable options.

such as
1. wood steering
2. HID
3. Nakamichi audio
4. coach perforated leather

do you want to compromise on luxury for low miles ? no way....

Low mileage on a 12 year old car isn't a big deal? Are you kidding? Start taking a look at other ES's in parking lots and you can kinda tell which ones have been driven more. I purposefully waited for a fresh ES and found mine a few years ago with low mileage, fresh and driven by an old lady. Low mileage makes a big difference as far as I am concerned, and just because these cars can last 300k+ doesn't mean a high or even above average mileage example isn't more prone to problems.

Nakamichi isn't so desirable; they don't make that equipment anymore and the quality (from what I heard) wasn't all that much better than the stock Pioneer.

Coach perforated leather is highly subjective. I agree with the HID and wood steering wheel though.
