Default How to check for sludge?

Just wondering how to check for sludge, since i hear some V6 Camry/ES300's are affected. I have a 2000 ES with 120,000 miles. Purchased last year with 108,000 miles. No problems as of now.

The only proper way is to remove a valve cover and inspect.

The removal of the valve cover for inspection is an excellent way to check for sludge. An alternative, quick, but not conclusive method is to check your oil level after the car has been sitting for at least 2 Hrs. Start it up and let it run till it reaches normal operating temeprtures. than shut it down again. Wait 5 Min and check the level again. If there is no sludge blocking any of the oil passages than your oil level should be almost the same as it was before, If its substantially lower, than you may have some sludge build-up that prevents the oil from draining back to the oil pan properly.

This procedure is practical when buying a car when its not feasible to remove a valve cover. Having said that, removing the valve cover is still preferable.

Phil
