Brake-light icon kept lighting up
For the past 2 days, my 92 ES300 brake light icon (the one that looks like the car) kept lighting up occasionally. Whenever it lights up I can make it go away by turning off the engine and retart again in about 10 minutes. I've checked my brake light bulbs, and they are fine. All brake lights worked even when the warning icon is on. Did anybody come across this problem before?
Thanks for your input.

similar thing happened to mine three times in the past 6 months. the first time, one of the two bulbs in the auxiliary brake light (the one in the middle) was actually out. so i go drive to get a new bulb and when i get out of the car and have a friend check to see if its out still, it is back on, and the warning light is off. the other two times that the "bulb out" warning indicator came on, it disappeared by the time i had time to check the back of the car. i think my car was just starved for my attention or something

Sorry Amrit50 & Gekko, but I'm referring to the "brake light-bulb icon" that looks like a car and lighted up yellow, not the brake warning light that lights up red.
I had my friend (a Lexus mechanic for 7 years and whom I have bought the car from) checked it out for me. He said bad contact is the most common problem because of oxidation. He also said over time the filament in the bulb becomes thinner and may not conduct causing the sensor to light up.
He cleaned the contact and replaced the 2 bulbs for me (no charge!) I'll have to wait and see if this solves the problem.

Sorry Egainer... Your wrong!!!!!
I am sorry to say Egainer that You are wrong.. I know for a fact that your parking break light will come on when your brake fluid is low. It happened to me and i filled it up, went on a long drive, let the car sit a couple of hours and it went off.. While it was one for like 4 weeks, I could not use my cruise control... I filled it up and everything has been grea since.. So yes, fill up your break fluid. GET THE RIGHT STUFF ALSO.. IT IS VERY SPECIFIC!!!!

You're right on 1loudlex! As to my problem, after replacing the bulbs and cleaning out the contact, the problem did not come back yet.

With all this talk to replacing the bulbs in that third brake housing. That's something I have to do too. I'm getting real annoyed seeing that warning light always on. People think my car is not running right or something. So, the real question is...how do you take it off to exchange the bulbs? I have a '95 ES.
I"ve seen it off before when the tinted my windows and installed the system, but I just can't seem to get it off. I feel as if I might break something, and I sure as hell don't wana do that! Any pointers or directions?

the plastic housing around it comes off w/ a little bit of tugging. try using a flathead, gently. once you get it popped, it should wiggle off.
oh, and don't worry too much about breaking it...it's mostly just a cover, and even if you crack it a bit, it's not like anyone would readily notice.

Well, I ended up breaking one of the tabs that lock it into place and looks like I need to replace both bulbs. I guess the original owner didn't properly put the bulb into the housing and it melted the plastic a little on the socket and the part where it goes into the housing. No biggie. But at least it's working again and no annoying warning light!
