high pressure return hose (power steering)
Has anyone changed out the high pressure return hose on their 2nd Gen ES? I recently changed the pressure hose that runs from the power steering pump to the fan and now I noticed that the high pressure return hose is leaking pretty bad. It's close to the firewall and needed to know if it's difficult to change.

I can't recall specifically on the ES, I know that it isn't the easiest to get to, but, it is not under high pressure... the only high pressure line in the system is from the pump to the rack, then the line from the rack to the reservoir, is just a return line - there should be only enough pressure in it to pump the fluid back up to the reservoir... then of course the suction line from the reservoir to the pump itself...
might want to double check though - because it isn't under much pressure (only a couple psi at most), it doesn't often leak...

Wow, get prepared for some sticker shock on that little part.
Part #44411-33040 is priced at $417.03 at one of the Texas Lexus dealers that sell on the internet (Park Place). The same part is used on the 6-cylinder Camry and is priced at $400.99 at an on-line Toyota dealer that I checked.
I would be tempted to check out salvage yards and try to find a used one. There should be lots of 6-cylinder Camrys out there and a few ES300's. I suspect that the same part is used on 94-96 models.
It appears that the part is a combination of metal tubing and rubber tubing. Can you isolate where it is leaking? If it is at one of the points where the metal and rubber come together, I would be tempted to put a screw-on clamp at that point, tighten it up, and see if that helps.

Good luck with fixing that, but you'll still get off cheaper than me.
I just replaced virtually my whole power steering system - everything was leaking - pump, hoses, etc. It started slowly, first leaking at the pump (passenger side). I'd have to add fluid every now and then. Then I noticed drips under the driver's side.
Replaced the following (as it appears on invoice, no part #s):
One set metal steering lines 376.57
Power steering hose 141.36
Remanufactured power steering pump 348.72
Labor 255.20
NJ Tax 78.54
Total 1200.00
I can tell you this, though, from experience - when your power steering goes, you don't then have "manual" steering - you have virtually "NO" steering. I couldn't even turn the wheel ! Luckily, it failed on my street by my house...

Good to know. I'm taking the ES to Toyota and they are going to rebuild the hose for $70 and labor will be about $200. Hopefully that is all that's wrong. I'll keep everyone posted.
