Update on 2002 ES300 Transmission Problem
A law firm will meet with Toyota's attorneys on October 29. They will propose to Toyota settlement terms which include repairing the transmission problem by installing a new computer chip and extending the duration of the powertrain warranty on all 2002 ES 300s.
Good luck

Man, thats a lot of work.. that really stinks for all the owners of the 2002 ES. Oh well, I still think that TOYOTA makes the best cars out there.. Everything is going to have a problem sometime!!

They are trying hard to make a fix but they haven't successfully created one yet. They can't put the computer chip on 2003 model on 2002 because the two models are quite different.
So we just have to be patient. Hopefully they are able to make one eventually.

If the transmission between the two models are that different, then they're basically admitting they messed up on the transmission and fixed it in the '03.

I posed the Oct. 29 attorney thing to customer service at www.Lexus.com and to my dealership. Both said they knew nothing of the hearing/meeting. Lexus.com gave a long explanaiton of how the trans and ecu learn driver habits and blah, blah, blah.
I asked them to register my email as a complaint of slow upshifting and when depressing the gas to the floor for rapid acceleration, the tranny seems like it upshifts one too many gears and winds out. It was noted that this could present the driver with a bad scenario should he need to "stomp it" to avoid a collision situation.
The next step would be to notify NTHB and approach it from the safety angle.
When asked on 11/9/02, Lexus of Norwood (Herb Chanmbers Motor Group), said they knew nothing of the problem, but did say that with the additon of the 5th gear, the engine/ecu has more gears to choose from to switch to. Duuuhh
