noticed that the overflow bottle needed refilling a little too frequently - to add, the temp gauge is running near the center - never did before. Owned car now going on 4 months. Not sure if radiator cap - no noted leaks and no coolant scent - should I start worrying about possible major repairs?

Could be, and most likely is something simple, but you MUST find the cause and fix it. Don't neglect, and don't delay.

+1^^ Seems like you have a leak in the system and the engine is running hotter than usual.
Keep in mind that temperature gauges are not accurate, they are just there to give you a rough idea. Coolant temperature varies greatly over a short period of time. It can rise and fall within seconds, so it's never stable like the gauge wants you to think. I realized this when I had my engine running with an OBD2 scanner hooked up.

Steady (or almost) near the center is where the needle of the temp gauge is supposed to stay after engine warm-up. If this is happening now but it has never happened before then two things: (1) you have a defective temp gauge sensor (or an out of spec unit installed by mistake in the past); (2) the engine is running hotter than usual. For (1) replace the sensor with a proper unit. For (2) get a leak test done ASAP and go from there.

Check for any obvious leaks. If none can be found, put some dye in the coolant.
Be sure to fix this problem, if you don't and the car overheats you can cause some serious damage. Also, never add cold coolant to a hot engine.

Best advice to you...park the car till you can figure it out. I had thesame problem. I paid no attention to it untill the engine overheated and burned out the head gaskets. Either the coolant is sipping into the combustion chamber or it is it is getting backed up in the water pump(faulty) and flowing out of the reservoir when hot. Have your water pump, thermostat and radiator checked out.
