Exhaust Sound and P0401

Exhaust Sound and P0401
Hello All,
Recently, I noticed the CEL came on in my 94 ES300. I also started noticing that I was getting a loud(er) exhaust sound from my car. I know there are no holes at least to the resonator, and I am fairly certain there aren't any further up.
I pulled the code today and I am getting an EGR Insufficient Code P0401.
My question is this; Would a bad EGR or VSV cause a louder exhaust sound? Or would a bad gasket or exhaust problem cause a P0401?
Thanks in Advanced!

You probably got an exhaust leak before the catalytic converters. As for the P0401, apply vacuum to the EGR and see if it's working, it will stumble the engine if it works. If not you may have a bad EGR or clogged EGR passages. Next check the EGR Modulator to see if there is vacuum to it when you rev the engine if not, you can have a bad modular. Next would be the EGR solenoid, the PCM controls this solenoid by turning it on, there is a switching valve inside that allows vacuum through to the EGR modulator and to the EGR for it to work. But most of the time, it's the EGR VSV solenoid that goes bad. But do make sure the EGR valve is working before changing this solenoid. GL
