How to fix poor gas mileage on a 2004 es330?
#31
On my 02 ES300 i was getting actual 25-27mpg at the pump, this was in the summer, mixed hw/city driving. Winter drops to low 20's. I have all season tires and the car 99% of the time is empty (no passengers/extra weight etc).
Now one of my my air flow sensors i think is going and mileage have dropped, so will be replacing probably both a/f sensors. Mileage - almost 180kmiles now, on my second set of belts here.

04 ES330
I just drove from Dallas to Chicago to Toledo and back to Dallas (visiting family), and I easily pulled 380 out of each tank. Wife and I averaged about 75mph. We could have gotten better mileage if we drove a little slower, but speed limits are 70 now, and who wants to drive slow anyway?!?!

I have a 2003 ES300 as well and see the same 280. I also see a little smoke occasionally at start up. Only last a few seconds then it is gone. 83,000 miles.

2004 ES330 83K Miles
Lexus ES 330: Added Lucas Fuel Treatment 5.3 Ounce Bottle into the Full Tank of Regular Gas. I was getting 21 MPG in Local Driving (almost no traffic) and 26 MPG on Highway (65 to 75 MPH). Reset the Lexus MPG Reader. Highway MPG jumped from 26 MPG to 32MPG to 34 MPG for 2 days. Then, down to 28 MPG. After 3 weeks, I was driving on Highway to 200 miles. MPG dropped down to 23 MPG for about 200 Miles Driving.
Now Again, since I used only Bottle of Lucas Fuel Treatment, I am going to try another 5 Ounce Bottle with Full Tank. I hope that Lucas Treatment have not damaged any thing. I used two 5 ounce Lucas Steering Leak Stop and it fixed the Steering Oil Leak. Therefore, I think second treatment Lucas Fuel Treatment should clean up and clogs or derbies in the Fuel System and Lexus ES330 MPG should go up. AM I WRONG? Thank you for sharing your experience.

21mpg in the city is very good mpg. our engines are rated 19 for city!
stop wasting money on "fuel treatments".
you are driving 210hp 3 liter v6 engine. do not expect gas consumption of a 4 cylinder toyota!
in general, biggest influences on your gas mileage:
1. driving style, also city vs highway, season (summer vs. winter)
2. not efficient air/fuel mix, faulty oxygen sensor, bad spark plugs
3. dirty air filter/air throttle, again leading to non-optimal air/fuel mix
4. tire pressure/ extra things in the car/stuffed trunk leading to extra energy(fuel) needed to carry all this weight around
5. roof bike racks and other attachments! they add to air resistance and increased fuel consumption.

2002 ES300 Gas Mileage
My 2002 ES300 got 22-24 MPG when new. Lexus had an issue with these models and a rough shifting transmission. Lexus said that a computer update to the transmission was available, but couldn't be reversed if completed. After much thought, I allowed them to do the update and my MPG dropped to 18. The transmission is nominally better. Not a good move.

If you're getting only 280 miles out of a tank then either you're doing mostly city driving or the engine might be running too rich for some reason. Bad o2 sensors, possibly? I'm assuming these newer cars should be pretty good on gas, at least better than the older ones.
This weekend I did a 300 mile round trip in my 92 ES, with about half of the driving at 70mph on the highway, and I still had about 1/4 of a tank left over afterwards. But for city driving you can totally forget about fuel efficiency especially if you use the AC... haha

Pole Position
To set a benchmark, I did a test last weekend. I drove 50-55mph on a rural highway, only a few slow downs and two towns to pass through. Out and back, empty car except me and two rifles, and no a/c, = 29.8mpg (87 octane from the same gas pump - topped off leaving and when returning).
2002 ES, fully serviced this summer (timing belt, fluids, PCV valve, MAF cleaned, ISV cleaned, OCV filter cleaned, new air filter, 1 cracked vacuum hose replaced, plugs checked (not changed), etc., etc.). 227k miles on it. So with care, they can deliver the same performance as new after nearly 1/4 million miles.
Fill the trunk, passengers, a/c, around town, DRIVING STYLE - big difference. I drive smooth, she drives fast and more agressively. MPG very different (as well as PCU behavior) when she drives vs. me. MANY variables in mpg figure.

Horrible gas mileage
I have a 2004 Lexus es330,full tank I only get about 170 miles per gallon. I have cleaned the MAF sensor.
Really bad gas mileage. Check engine light sometimes comes on sometimes it's off.

Lexus Champion
I'm getting 14L/100km (16 MPG) with 50/50 City/highway driving on my 2005 Lexus ES330.
I know my tire pressures are fine, but as the weather warms up I'll see if that improves my fuel economy. Last summer I was only getting 12L/100km (19 MPG).
I'll have to run though the engine bay and clean the air filter, throttle body, MAF and perhaps the PCV and check the spark plugs to make sure everything is good under the hood.

Filled up this past weekend. Had been driving in Austin, which reduces the MPG a bit due to hills, and showed 355 miles until empty. I was getting about 24.8 mpg
