OK, I've driven both IS and the 3-series, and I don't know how anyone can say that the IS has no soul. Granted, most Japanese cars are not that involving, bu the IS is a big exception. During everyday driving, the car behaves so much like an E36 3-series, its scary. In notmal driving, and up to 8/10 of its capabilities, the IS300 is actually more fun to drive than the current E46 3 series. The IS300 has a nice, sharp, edgy feel that you don't get with the stock 325i/330i during everyday driving.
When pushed to the limit, the IS starts to get a little unsettled and the suspension is not really up to the task in extreme situations. This is where the 3-series shines. It is totally controllable and communicative at the limit.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the IS300 is a very capable, entertaining car, and a great value. If I were to pick a car to drive on my every day commute, I might even take an IS over a 3-series because of its fun factor in regular driving. Overall though, the 3 series is a superior car.
