2002 ES showing "4" gear when in Drive

Okay I take that back, something is actually wrong with your car.
A good first step is to check if it's just a faulty indicator or the transmission. So definitely verify whether the car shifts up to Fourth or Fifth, when the shifter is in D.

I drove 80 and it doesn't downshift or feel any different. Tried same at 60 mph.
But when I was driving 65 I changed into "3" and car downshifted.

2002 ES300 has a 5 speed automatic transmission with over drive.
each gear operates within certain range of speeds/rpms. You need to figure out if your 5th/overdrive gears are working. The simple way to do this - is you get on a high way and monitor rpms as you accelerate and count the shifts confirmed by change in rpms or if you cant - write down speed and rpm next to it (45/55/65/75mph). 4th shifts into 5th somewhere in the 50-55mph range (? approx.), you should see rpm's drop when you go into higher (5th) gear.

one last test. get on a highway with gear set in "4" and accelerate, at around 55 you rpms should go up to ~3K and engine will rev noticeably louder. At this point, slow down to around 40, put gear in "D" and repeat acceleration, this time around tranny will will go into 5th and rpms should drop to around 2K. This would mean that all of your gears are working fine and there is just weird electrical issue with your dash gear lights.

Yeah obviously I'll get that done. I have no way of actually installing it. Will take it to the dealer since they're the professionals. Just wanted to know how much estimated those things cost, if that ends up being the issue.

Same problem with displaying "4" instead of "D"
Hi all,
Sorry to bring this thread back from the grave, but KS13 - Did you figure out what the problem was?
I'm having the exact same problem on my car - I've read countless threads at this point - Could be a knock sensor gone bad, shifter position sensor, or the shifter assembly...
Whatever the case may be, my tranny shifts smoothly, I have no CEL's, and am definitely putting the car in D, not 4...
Any thoughts?
