I had a rubbing/grinding noise in my car so I took it into the shop and it turned out to be a loose plate that sits behind the rotor at the back. All 4 wheels have it, the front one still being solid and the rear ones totally rusted/corroded away.
My mechanic said it was called a "backing plate", but when I go to rock auto or search around online, I can't find the part.
I want to replace them the next time I do my rotors, my mechanic said its not that important and it's alot of labour because you have to take everything off.
Anyone know what the part is called? Is it important to replace?
The one that was making noise was so rusted down my mechanic just snapped it off.

Lexus calls it a dust cover, don't think you can buy it separately, you have to buy the entire steering knuckle/hub assembly . If you really want to repair this, best bet is to get a wrecker part, but it is no picnic to put them in especially the rear ones.

I always call it a backing plate. And you can usually only get it at the dealer. You have to get them from the South to get them unrusted. If you like I'll put you in contact with my friend who can get them from his local junkyard for you in Florida. Thats where I get them from for the Drum to Disc swaps I do on Camry's.
You don't really HAVE to have it honestly. The rears I'd say are more important then the front though.

Again, there is a reason for going to Pick and Pull junkyards as they are cheap.......
And they use the SAME backing plates as the 92-01 Camry's.
