ES300 sputtering, coughing on acceleration

1993 ES300, 114,000 miles. Has a bad "#2 knock sensor". Decided not to replace it some time ago. Now, with the sputtering my mechanic reports NO other "code" shows. He checked the intake, no leaks. Going to try the fuel filter next. Says he doesn;'t have software to cover a car that old. what can I do here if the fuel filter replacement doesn't do it. it's a shot in the dark.

Bad TPS or bad knock sensor will surely give you problems like this. Or if car is misfiring under load, i would check spark plugs and spark plug wires.
