1998 ES300 Radio Blues..... please help
I have the Nakamichi system in my car.
The problems that I'm having are:
1) All speakers are blown- including subwoofer
2) The music goes in and out from front to rear, or left to right. Which is really annoying (I don't know if its the amps or what that's causing this problem for #2)
I want to keep the Nakamichi head unit and replace all the speakers if possible, but the question is can it be done for a decent price? Or should I just replace everything (deck, speakers, amps, sub)? I went to a audio place and they said that they would have to look at the head unit and maybe the amp, to see if one of them are bad. They are going to charge me $80 per hour just to see if it can be done, plus what kind of connection the deck has (RCA plugs...???). I'm trying to find the best way about going about this. I was wondering if anyone can give me any insight on what I should do? It would be greatly appreciated.
thanks-

Your problem is more likely a defect in the head unit or amp - highly unlikely that all speakers are bad. Your system does not have "RCA plugs" - all connections are proprietary. A Lexus dealer or knowledgeable repair shop should be able to tell you which component is defective - head unit or amp - without spending much time on it.
The Nak system in my 00 LS still works perfectly after 12 years although I did have to have the head unit repaired a few years ago when the right channel started fading in and out. After you find out which component is bad, you can probably find a replacement on eBay.

I get the fading in /out also, but assumed it was just the radio signal getting better / weaker as I've only really noticed while listening to FM. Will had to pay a bit more attention next time I'm on cd or the cassette adapter to my phone.

So I got it tested and its the head-unit and not the amp. I'll have to find another Nakamichi head-unit and replace it. The audio guy said that I have two choices:
1) replace the speakers and amp(since its not the most powerful amp)
2) replace just the speakers and keep the factory amp
I'll probably just replace the speakers with Boston Acoustics and see how that sounds. Hopefully it should sound better.
