Default Engine knock?!

Is it normal for a 92 ES300 engine to be making "ticking sounds" from the engine compartment at a slow frequency rate? I just noticed this when I opened the hood while the engine was running (I had the car for only 2 months). Normally, it is not heard from inside the car.

This "ticking sound" can also be heard if you stand close to the front hood, especially on a cold morning (approx 0 degree Celcius). One time I hard accelerate while the engine was still cold, there was a "ping" that can be heard from inside the car. That made my heart stop for a moment!

Is this a serious problem? Has anyone experience this before? I only use 91 or higher octane.

Thanx for your help.

yeah, I think the sme thing here. After an oil change, I didn't notice the noise anymore.

By the way, NEVER accelerate really hard when the engine is still cold, especially not with an older engine. I try not to take it past 3K until warmed up.

Question

The ticking sound you hear may also be the fuel injectors. They make a distinct and consistent noise.

Uhmmm. I experienced this after I got the oil change from my usual mechanic. Is there a specific oil that I have to use for Lexus? What about the filter? Do you guys always use Lexus oil filter? What type of oil should I use?

I never had any problem with the oil from my mechanic for my BMW and Ford Windstar.

Use the weight and minimum grade oil indicated in the manual. I think the latest is "SL". I prefer synthetics, Mobil 1- 5W30 for the new Lex. Use a name brand filter, Fram, Mobil 1, and of cousre Toyota/Lexus (but you have to get that from the dealer with a little price increase). If you switch to synthetic oil, you can't/shouldn't go back to conventional fossil based oil.

Synthetic oil will not break down as fast, especially in hot settings and will remain fluid at lower temps. I'm outside of Boston, MA so variation in temps is something I consider. They cost a little more but provide more protection overall, especially on cold startups.

The dealer and quick change places (Jiffy Lube) provide synthetics, but again, at a higher price.

Actually, it makes for a fun Sat. morning project if you do it yourself.
