Default RPM start

I noticed an odd thing this morning when I started my car to go to work. The RPM needle shoots up to 2... normally, my needle stays around 0.5 or 0.75. Anyone ever had this happen on their car before? My engine felt the same though on the way to work, and my RPM needle settles back to normal when I make a full stop. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I got my oil changed yesterday at the usual shop, and they know my car very well. Plus, I park my car outside everyday, and this morning the temps were in the 30s, but no frost. I have a feeling the needle situation is just temporary for that cold morning, and probably won't show up when I go out to lunch. Feel free to leave any comments, thanks!

Same thing happens to mine. I noticed it and my dad of course had to make a comment, "Why the hell is this rice revving so high?"

your car only does that for a few moments after you start it. This is because your engine is cold and trying to warm-up. normally it goes down when its at normal operating temp.

Yeah, I kinda figured that might be the problem, but it's kinda funny that I never really pay attention to that every time I start up the car for the last 6 yrs I've owned it. When I went out to lunch today, the RPM needle rests at the 0.5-0.75 range. Great thing about the ES is that it usually takes a minute or less for the car to warm-up (except for snowy conditions, then I let it warm up for another few minutes to melt and scrape out snow/ice on the windshield, windows and rear glass).

I have always noticed this with all of my cars. When the weather is a little bit on the cool side, or if you parked your cars for many days, the engine will rev @ approx 2K until the egnine temperature reaches its operating temperature. I believe this is very normal.

I assumed it was just the engine warming up also, but then again 2K RPM is awfully high for a warm-up speed. My mechanic checked out my car and said there's nothing to worry about, so I'll take his word for it.

That situation is totally fine.

I tested this.

Mine usually starts at about 2K also thanks to cold Chicago weather when parked outside. I don't push the car until the engine temp. needle reaches about midrange.

This morning, it was in the garage, which was heated @ 65 and it started off around 1K.

Conclusion: temperature is the factor.
