Default speedo needle just about dead.....

the time has come....my speedometer needle is on its last leg. for those of you that are familiar with the problem with them burning out, well, only the section closest to the "root" or center of the speedometer functions at all times. it was fine when the outer edge part still glowed cuz it was easy to tell your speed, but not anymore. *sigh* i wonder if anyone makes custom gauges.

I dunno about custom guages, but i remember that there was a place that would change the whole system to cathode instead of led, and you could get it in blue.

I had my speedo and tach needles and backlight bulbs replaced at the closest Lexus dealer and it cost me about $600!! OUCH!! But I have to know what speed I'm going, so what else could I have done? Didn't know about any alternatives.

i got the same quote abotu 6 bills. MeZoom sorry to hear about your needles....its happened to us all lol.

Getting a manufacturer to make indiglos is not all that difficult. I know the camry people got it done with a minimum order of 40. If we can get that many people together I dont know. Another thing is the needle would still be dead....just easier to see.

crap... this reminds me... i still need to call Davenport and figure out if they found aftermarket needles yet. they're a Lexus specialist shop, so i'm hoping they've found it. it's been over 3 months since i last talked to them. i'll post up some results on this topic. $600 is quite a lot for new needles. i'd rather go with reading off the numbers than pay $600 for new needles. which is pretty much what i'm doin.

$600 for just needles. You guys are getting ripped off. It was $600 for me to have my entire guage cluster redone....

i too have a needle problem.....the middle two thirds of my gas needle is burned out........but the LEXUS place in charlotte said that they cannot just replace needles and that they have to replace the entire cluster......and they quoted me $350 parts and labor......thats way less then the $600.....and is it possible to just replace the needle???

I wouldn't bother spending hundreds to have the fuel gauge needle fixed. That is the kind of thing that you can take a close, long look at when the car is stopped. Plus the low-fuel light will always come on when you get really low. I did spend hundreds myself--but for the speedo, which I decided I needed to avoid speeding tickets.

An easily readable substitute for a fuel gauge is one of your two trip meters. Just fuel up completely, reset one of your trip meters to zero, leave that lit up on the dash, and when you get to roughly 325-400 miles, you need to fuel up.

damn, you get 325-400. that is not a good way to tell when you are empty. i get between 250 and 300. cause of my driving aggressiveness. i only get 325 highway only. and no, my car has nothing wrong with it, it's been in having everything changed on time, and no problems reported... except burnt out needles. you guys make it seem like when your needle is flickering, you can't see anything at all that is it measuring. my eyesight is horrible, but when its flickering or gone, i can still see where the needle is at with no problem, even at night time. my needles are flickering... but now they are fine. what i did was turn the parking lamps on at night... turn the guages all the way down so no light at all, then turn them up one level so they barely come on. i can see this fine during the day, and fine during the night... and my needles light up fully now. this delays it until i get them fixed (been doing this for months now) parts of my speedo and tach are missing....

ok bat eyes, i dunno exactly about your needles, but like i think i said, if the needles are flickering somewhere in the middle or towards the non important lower parts that dont point to anything, then it is absolutely fine....just annoying. but now, since this past week, my speedo needle has burnt/flickered out towards the outside, where it actually does point to numbers. take the "long hand" (minutes) of a wall clock for example. i could cover up the whole middle area with a piece of paper where the hour hand and second hand pin together in the center and you would still be able to pretty much tell where the minute hand is pointed. but lets say next i cut off the minute hand halfway. then i suspect youd have a much harder time telling what exactly its (supposed to be) pointing at.

(not putting ya down eric, just messin with ya)

I'm surprised you're all having problems with the LED needles. How about the backlights for the gauge cluster. I have several burnt bulbs and it looks funny as helll, kinda like a jigsaw puzzle. I can see 20,40, but then 60,80 are invisibile but 100,120 are there....just looks odd.

We should hook up a group buy for gauge clusters. I can't imagine anybody not having a problem with either their needles or backlights.
