Possibly cheap diy aux input for 97 radio
Hey all,
Rarely cruise these forums but i cracked open the radio and found a schematic and believe that i found the correct pins for soldering an aux port to, was wondering if anyone was wanting to try it out?

Yeah, i know there are companies that do this, but its like only $5 worth of parts, and i do believe that i actually have the correct pins to add an aux in for the tape deck.

I know this option is considered "ghetto", but I use my factory tape deck as the way to bridge my iPod with a cassette adapter.
I was going to buy one of the units where someone has modified the factory one with a headphone jack, but the sound quality was about 90% of what an auxilary adapter sounds like when I tried it out, so I just saw no reason to get it done.
When you play with the Dolby settings, you can get it to where it sounds just like a CD. It's a lot easier than pulling the headunit out and soldering, might be worth a try first.

Good news
Got it to work. Actually it sounds beautifully but...
Switching to radio still plays the ipod, you can hear both, the radio and ipod. But that can be remedied by unplugging the aux. and i dont know if there is an issue with the deck or not, but it doesnt play cd's. I persoanlly believe it is a prior issue that was there before i started messing with it.
What i ultimately wanted was for the aux to be working only in tape mode, and push the fm/cd mode and it would automatically switch over without me having to physically remove the aux cable.

Update
When testing last night, only some of the radio was put back together and maybe a connection wasnt right for the cd player. Assembled everything and put back in the car, and every function works. Am/fm/tape/cd all works. And the ipod sounds beautiful through the speakers.
Charley
Now onto fixing the clock, which is just soldering as well

I've seen oem radios on eBay with an aux jack fitted in the faceplate or mounted on the back. I got an aux jack from a Camry and wanted to give a clean look by mounting it in the glove box or inside the center armrest console. Let us know how it's done and if everyone likes it, we'll make it a sticky.

Im going to post a DIY sometime in the future. Yes, the aux cable will need to be disconnected to hear the FM/AM/CD mode. I really wanted to find the Tape outputs, but was unable to. Anyways, here are some pics
pic with fixed clock and Tape mode of stereo
pic of location of aux jack, I wanted it to be as clean/simple as possible, and the gold matches the Compact disc logo
another pic of jack
with aux cable reel
Aux jack, Philmore 70-534
another pic of 70-534
side profile of 70-534
and a few pics of my car

Turned out nice and has that factory look. I have to search for another good 92-94 radio with security function cause my old one gave the ghost. I have the 95-96 radio for the moment. That's a sexy 3ES btw.
