Doing valve cover gasket. How to remove these bolts?
#16
OK, so I removed the EGR pipe and, although still tight, I was able able to remove the valve cover. Got the valve cover all clean and new grommets installed and then found out it's the wrong rear valve cover gasket that I received.
It sucks big time. At the time of order I requested that they double check so they would not send the wrong parts. When I received the shipment I verified using part numbers on the bags. This wrong cover gasket came in a bag without a label so I couldn't verify. Man, and now it stings. I don't have time to wait. I'm wondering if I can go with after market from pepboys or advanced auto parts?
BTW, I placed my order from http://www.cstoyotaparts.com. This is conicelli toyota of springfield, PA

Email your local dealer and tell them how much you will pay (think of the MSRP). They will counter offer and the gasket should arrive in 2-3 days. If you can't wait that long, try Felpro - I hear it's a good company.

I used a pair of needle nose pliers and something sharp to cut the rubber grommet. I only had an issue with the grommet, because it was the original factory piece. The valve itself was replaced by somebody else before, so it came out easy.

Cant use just use a regular socket and remove the nut itself instead?

OK, I did it. No leftover nuts/bolts :-). Will continue to monitor to see if it still leaks although I highly doubt it. It's a great feeling to cross this off on my to-do :-)

There're no nuts to remove instead.

Nice work. I had an oil leak on the side of the engine, that I figured was a result of my poor valve cover job. It turned out to be an issue with old cam shaft seals - taken care of along with a new timing belt.
