Default 1993 es300 clunk

just bought this 93 with 140K miles. I noticed when I let off gas, rpm drops to 1000-1500, then I hit gas to accelerate, I feel a clunk. If it was RWD., it'd almost be like a sloppy u-joint.

are there tranny issues to be aware of? Is this normal? it is pretty slight. notice it a bit more in stop&go bumper to bumper when you are low idle, then hit gas to roll forward, etc...

thanks

Most likely cause is worn out engine or transmission mount.

Motor mounts/Transmission mounts would cause this. Problem will cease once you get rid of the old smashed one's. I have this BTW and I replaced the tranny mounts but it didn't stop the problem. Still thinking about motor mounts. Also look into drivetrain and missing rubber.

Transmission mounts are a piece of cake. Motor mounts are another story. Put it this way, I'd rather do the transmission mounts 10 times than do the motor mounts. There are DIY's of both lying around on this forum...

I wonder if there is a way to check & isolate exactly where the problem is.

um, stupid question....are these RWD or FWD? on FWD, isn't motor/tranny all connected and using the same set of mounts?

Well, to check the motor mounts:
Start car and press the brake.
have a friend to watch the engine with hood open.
Rev it, not extremely of course, just like 2500 RPM's.
Watch for the engine to move forwards, like tipping forwards.
If engine tips and moves then it tis your motA mounts!
I will be doing this test soon to figure out if the "thunka thunka" is the motor mounts or diff missing rubber, or drivetrain.
GL!

check suspension bushings. Mostly overlooked the LCA's take a beating and make all kinds of noises when they're worn out. I'd start with the motor then work to the suspension because at some point it will all need to be fixed up.

took to mechanic and he said the front lower motor mount had some play. I am searching these forums using several word combinations, but not finding a DIY.

anyone able share a how-to?

Best I could find. Maybe you can make a DIY for this if there is none?

i have a parts car. i removed the front motor mount and it was worn. so I bought a new one and took it to mechanic (he was replacing Y pipe, oil filter mounting bracket gasket, and this was right there too).

my car still does the same thing: clunk on acceleration when I've decelerated and am at around 1000RPM, gas it and clunk. .

when I did parts car, the large bolt on top of that lower mount is a bugger. no room to get a long ratchet in there to get any leverage. I ended up getting stubby ratchet on it, then wedging a long piece of sched-40 metal pipe against it, then whacking pipe with mini-sledge and it busted loose. once loose, that big bolt comes out easy. The other 3 on the bottom of the mounting bracket part were pretty simple.

hmmm, maybe time to look at that LCA bushing. I dunno. getting frsutrated with this money pit. bad purchase by me (relative to price paid and work I have sunk into it).
