I have a 1996 Lexus ES300. I took it to Autozone because I had the CEL on. The girl said it was an OBD I because the diagnostics port wasn't on the right side of the steering wheel(she couldn't find the port). I later found the diagnostics port on the left side under the dash. The port had a cover over it and is somewhat oval in shape. I read somewhere here that 1994 was the year they changed to OBD II. Is this correct??? Is it a OBD I or OBD II?
Can you tell from the VIN # what month the car was built? If so how?
Thanks,
Bob L.

Your car is definitelhy OBD 2.
OBD2 became mandatory on all 1996 and up vehicles sold in North America. I believe however that Lexus had it even in the 95 model.

The is another port under the dash on my 94, but that serves some other purpose. The OBDII code reader will not fit in that port.
The first ES models that had OBDII were the 94 models.

not sure this will give you all the info you want. If you search these forums, i remember seeing more detailed info on how to decipher VIN.

Usually, at least in my experience, you can only use a current OBD2 scanner on any vehicle 96 and up, regardless if it has the 94-95 OBD2 system. Even though lex started using OBD2 in the 94 es300, 94-95 were off years where a different connector and scanner port shape was used.

Last year the check engine light came on. I checked the code. The reader gave the number for the bank one, sensor one oxygen sensor. Changed out the sensor, and the check engine light was gone.

I have a 95 es300 and have both OBD I & II ports. the II is in the regular spot under the dash by the steering wheel and the OBD I is under the hood on the passenger side towards the firewall, it's a small black black box and uses pin connectors and a test light to count the flashes.
