hey guys, i know where the pcv valve is but i dont have a car anymore to tell you guys or take pics of it so i can show you i am upset about that and i am blabbing on and on and on yah but the pcv valve is left of manifold......and yah do be careful when taking it out the lil grommet hose is fragile.

When you get it back, post your mpg with the new valve. I'm curious to the increase. It may take an entire tankful to get a good average.

There is a recent thread under Maint. that talks about PCV valves on different models, but your discovery describes similar placement.

I can't help bout wonder if lack of changing the PCV valve could be part of the reason why there seems to be alot of gasket replacements on the ES. If the PCV valve is not functioning properly, the pressure build up has got to go somewhere.

Well, i got the car back from the dealer yesterday. I figured i could change the grommit myself and save a few bucks so I told the dealer not to fix the car. I went out to the toyota dealer and bought a grommit for $7.00. I fished out the broken part of the grommit and replaced it with the new one. The car runs great now, much smoother ride w/ more pick-up. I will post pics of the old PCV valve when i get the chance. Unfortunately, I cannot post if my MPG will change or not yet. I am leaving for California today and wont be back for 3 weeks. WooHoo!

It's your K&N sir! The PCV valve is a good idea too.

Even slightly harder driving with a K&N decreases your gas mileage by quite a bit.

I can't give specific numbers, but when I had my K&N in my LS my mileage dropped about 80 miles per tank. Went from 320 (stock airbox) to 240 (K&N.)

The sound is great- yes...but in my case it actually took AWAY power (presented in my dyno test) and hurt my mileage.

There has to be another filter option beisdes K&N. Here's a link to my dyno results.

i don't own an LS400 but I can tell you that winterized gasoline (higher oxygen content) will cause a lower mpg along with the engine running extremely rich due to the cold weather at startup (supposedly higher oxygen means lower emissions but crappy mpg so in the end the consumer loses with no net gain in cleaner air)...some cars are worse off than others...winter gas coupled with some other problems with your car is probably causing such a low mpg...

if this is all wrong, forgive me...i'm a newbie who drives an is300 5mt in Cali..

I have teh 1mz-fe engine in Toronto Canada.use my car alot on the highway and have a cold air intake and an exhaust (resonator back)i drive real hard( so i pin the gas all the time)
Have the usual synthtic oils for engine ,transmission and power steering( it also uses trans fluid)
plus bosch plat 4 plugs
i get 900 km if all highway
550-600 km if both
and 500 if all city
i don't use the a/c much unless summer
and i have 18 inch chrome rims
so i think i have really good mileage as part of the intake and exhaust mods aswhen i took it for emissions testing the tech who tested it at Lexus said he had never seen such low particle counts in any lexus ever
so i must have done something right.
Plus it really goes like stink now

hmm...so how do you guys estimate your mpg? fill er up and mark down mileage? see how far it goes til gas light goes up?

I calculate it the old fashioned way.

Fill up at a pump, stop when the nozel shuts off itself and don't force fill the rest.
jot down mileage.
Drive until there is at most 1/4 of a tank left.
Fill up the same way at the same pump and nozel as before.
Divide the mileage by the amount pumped.
Drive off and have fun.

I am finding the calculated ave mpg displayed on my dash is actually very accurate.

for the 97 ES, is the Valve in the same area? how often should this be changed ? is it better to buy it from lexus?
