I mentioned this previously in this thread.

According to www.Lexus.com the PCV valve should be replaced at 60k or 90k depending on the inspection at that time. They didn't say definate. I also looked in the manual and it is not stated as routine service item, like filters and fluids.

From experience with GM, the aftermarket PCV I got at AutoZone ($3.98) was not up to vehicle/GM standards and ran rough. The $5.99 AC/Delco replacement part was a world of difference. Using experience as a guide for my logic, I would just pay the Lexus part man and get a genuine replacement for the PCV.

If it is not in the same place, it should look pretty much the same.
There is a thread that talks about the PCV on an LS and it is on the right side of the engine.

Incidently, I had a K&N filter in the stock air box on the Bonne. Each time the mileage dropped and the engine ran rough, it was the PCV. (but that was on a GM, "Garage Man's Companion")

I don't see why not.
Ask the part man if it is cross referenced for Lexus.
Bring your engine code (ie, 1MZ-FE), this will help.

Do the AT&T thing first, call before you make the trip.

Well, Im back. Been driving the car for a week now. Filled up a whole tank with 93 gas. Drove all over town and also a trip to NYC and back to philly. Got 279 miles on 15.33 gallons. That works out to be 18.19 mpg. Its a little better than before. Im going to run another tank and see what happens, this time strictly city driving.

18 is actually quite good gas mileage, unless you ran highway the entire time. if there was some rush hour stop-and-go, then that sounds about right. as long as you don't floor these cars too much, your mileage should be pretty good.

Once you get the mpg stabilized or established, for curiosity sake, I would pop in a standard Lexus/Toyota air filter or aftermarket equivalent (Penzoil, STP, Fram, etc). Run it for 3 to four more tankfuls and see if that further increases your mpg into the low 20's.

So then I'm assuming that 20-21 mpg isn't so bad for a 122k mile ES? I do have the K&N as well... I can test the economy difference if anyone hasn't recently done so (in NY with the oxygenated gasoline for now).

That's pretty decent if it is "around town driving". I would hope for a little higher if it was purely 55-75 mph straight out highway cruising.

I am not sure if I buy the K&N as a reason for low mileage.
My experience with K&N was a rectangular filter that was put in the stock air box of a '93 supercharged Bonneville. Similar to what would be done on the Lex unless you did a total air intake make-over. Didn't see a difference in mileage but picked up a few ponies.

That's why I asked him to try a stock filter to see. So far K&N doesn't list a filter for the 2002, so I can't try it on my own. It would be cool if you could do it, too. I'm a scientist by trade...the more data the better.

Talk about pushing the Lex ('96 ES) to the max...

On my way up to Maine, I filled up about 17.5 gal-- one gallon shy of empty! -- after putting in 463 miles from the previous fill-up. That calculates to almost 26.5 MPG, probably the best fuel mileage I've gotten in a long while. Too bad the gas prices aren't being friendly these days...

the 96 es300's have an 18 gallon tank?

i always fill up when i see the orange light and i never filled more than 15, is that reserve tank or something?

The '96 ES has an 18.5 gallon fuel tank, and yes, there is like a 2-3 gallon reserve when the orange (warning) light shows up. Still a sign of comfort for most of us
