Default Recording Chassis Noises

I'm thinking of getting a small clip-on microphone that I can plug into my iPhone. That way I can extend the cable to where ever I think the noise is coming from and tape it, without worrying about damaging the equipment. What are your thoughts? Do you think it will be effective?

Something inexpensive, like this

I'm trying to track down a "tennis ball" sound that's coming from my front end, whenever I drive over a rough patch of road. I'm open to any other suggestions.
