My radio works but in order to change the channel, I have to press the button then lightly press on the LCD screen or it doesnt change. Additionally, when I first get in the car it doesnt show the alpha numeric characters on the screen until i press on this same spot on the LCD. I am pretty handy and was wondering if this is something I can fix myself.

sounds like something has a loose connection somewhere behind the LCD. No way to tell if it's an easy fix unless you take it apart to look at the inside. You would have to take it out to replace it anyway; you could source a used one from eBay first and swap it out if you can't do anything with it. However aftermarket is always an option.
