Default Timing belt jump = non start?

I was sitting in my works parking lot and car decided it wanted to stall. No noises out side of a slight shutter. Went to start the car back up and this is what i am welcomed with.

It is not the battery as i had truck attached to it just in case. Part of me is thinking timing as i dont think it has even been replaced and we checked tonight and there is a crack on the belt about a 1/4. But belt is still tight.

Here is a video and the odd noise the starter makes.

Any other ideas? Im scared to pay to have belt done and it not be it. So it is up in the air to fix or sell and get something else.

Sounds like a belt issue. What year is the car?

Sounds very much like a broken belt, or at least one that is damaged and not able to turn the cams properly. The engine sounds like it's free wheeling, a sure sign of a broken timing belt.

Sorry its a 95. with 160k
Prior owner did not know if the belt was ever done so all i can guess it is the original belt.

If it is the belt do i need to worry about valve train damage or is this a non interference motor?

Yes, so no worries about that.

Cool,

Now when we were checking things over. We had part of the cover off and during cranking the belt was moving and turning the valve train.

But if it could be timing belt i guess i will call around tomorrow for prices to have done.

So i found a place that will do it for $350. It is a highly recommended place here and been in business ever since i remember 20+yrs.

I explained what it did and he said if the valve train is turning when trying to crank then it is not the timing belt but something else. Pretty much said even if it jumped timing it will sound like it is trying to start. Even back fire but it is not doing it.

Before i send it in im gonna pull the icm and try to pull the starter to have tested to rule those out.
Startign to think its not even worth saving the car due to all the other issues. Needs new suspension all round and it eats power steering fluid like crazy ( using a full large bottle once a week).
