The fuel pump is not supposed to run when you turn the key. It only runs when you turn the key to the crank position, and you wouldn't be able to hear it when the starter is running.

Remove the back seat and energize the fuel lines by manually hooking up a 12V power supply to the fuel pump. You will need to know which pins to use. If the pump runs, you can then try starting the car. If you're not comfortable doing that, you can inject a flammable liquid(carb cleaner) into the throttle body/intake plenum while cranking the engine. This will also tell you if it's a fuel issue.

If you determine that your fuel supply is okay, after those tests, you may proceed onto testing your spark. This is a bit easier. You will need to remove one of the coils with a spark plug attached. Then lay the whole thing on the engine block and stand back. Have somebody crank the engine and see if the spark plug is working.

Lastly, I would check the compression and timing. Oh and a weak battery may also be an issue.

Nice work. How did you narrow it down?
