Intake Air Flow Meter ??
In a 1992 Lexus ES300, what is the intake part called that is after the hose, but before the filter? Its like a unit, where the MAF sensor plugs in? Is that called the Intake Air Flow Meter ? That whole unit?? Also, does the MAF sensor just plug in or is it soldered in there somewhere? The reason I ask is that I tried to pull that plug out and it kinda "ripped out". Now my car wont start. Is there anyway I can by-pass that MAF sensor and just put an intake pipe on there? How much would a new Intake Air Flow Meter cost?? Thanks for the help.....

Not sure on how much part is but you do need it for the car to run properly. You can put it on the end of the aftermarket intake and it won't be in the way, but to my knowledge you DO need it for the car to run. I just installed an intake on my car and was wondering the same thing, thats how I know. Sorry man

MAFs are expensive for a sensor. I had to replace one on a 93 Bonneville. From the dealer it was $275.00. I was able to get it online for about $150. It was very easy to replace (3 screws and one wire plug).
Get a part number of the Toyota MAF. Call Lexus or Toyota and see if this is cross-referenced to the one you need to fix. My guess is it probably won't be cross-referenced.
Call Lexus and find out about the price of an exact replacement. Then try online, one site I have found very well priced in the past was: www.expressautoparts.com
MAF sensors measure the amount of air that passes through it. The ECM or ECU uses this information to determine the operating condition of the engine to control fuel delivery. The sensor produces a frequency output (~30-160 hertz) based on the air that rushes by it. The MAF sensor signals also rely upon the air box or intake structure it was designed to be in. If you take a sensor from one intake and put it in an intake of different dimensions, it may not produce the same signals, thus giving wrong information to the ECU. Some ECUs can be reprogrammed for the change and some can relearn the signals and adjust accordingly. Some won't like it at all.
If you find out the price, post it, I would be curious.
