Default Extended Engine/Tranny life....

What are some ways to extend the life of an engine/tranny with 180+ mileage?

Change oil with religious conviction every 3000 miles, do lots of 'pre-emptive' maintenance (ie if you know your waterpump needs to be replaced soon, do it NOW), and hope for the best! For the tranny, check the tranny fluid on a regular basis to make sure nothing looks wrong, and take it easy- no neutral dropping and brake torquing.

make sure you change your oil filter too every 3000 miles. Inspect oil livels often. Every 5k miles use some of that techron fuel system cleaner stuff. And if you use higher mileage oils it will help recondition the seals.

As far as the transmission goes, no neutral drops and maybe invest 50 bucks in a transmission cooler. Heat is the number one factor/cause of dead transmission. Maybe have a fluid flush done also. If the fluid in the tranny looks black and dirty that can be a sign of little life left.

Also did you have your timing belt changed recently if not I think you should go ahead and have it done.

How often does the water pump need to be replaced?
