2006 ES330

Best: The ride (love that quiet Lexus glide), high quality interior materials, features (navigation, heated/cooled seats, HID's, etc...), trunk/interior space, still looks great at 7 years old

Worst: Couldn't agree more about the quirky transmission, I don't like the Drive by Wire system, and the handling leaves a lot to be desired.

The 3.3 isn't a slow engine, but the Drive by Wire and transmission make it feel slow at times. My 98 Camry V6 feels faster, even though the ES is faster on paper.

Overall, it's a great car. I like to complain about the handling, but the car was designed to have a soft ride...

2005 Lexus ES330

Best: Smooth comfy ride, outstanding fit and finish (better than later model Lexus's too!), solid feeling, quiet, Lexus cachet.

Worse: Drive by wire throttle and jerky transmission. This makes the vehicle hard to handle in stop and go traffic. Also, not good in the snow with Michelin tires. Unimpressive fuel economy, even with a light foot (18/26mpg city/hwy). Large blind spots behind A and B pillars.

I couldn't agree with you more. The 3.3L engine has more get up and go when the transmission feels like it. You have to know how to downshift the transmission to accelerate at the peak torque around 3000 RPM to really feel it pull. Overall the car is really lazy, and I swear the DBW gas pedal feels like it has a motor pushing back on your foot when trying to overtake someone.

My 99 Solara V6 is a much faster and pepper car, with its traditional cable throttle system and willing 4 speed automatic. Combined with increased steering feel, I actually prefer driving the Solara day to day than the Lexus, its more maneuverable and fun to drive.

1997 ES300 (non coach addition)

Best: The smooth ride (of course), fairly low maintenance, the much cheaper interchangeable parts from Solara, Camry, and Avalon , lots of trunk space (imo anyways), comfortable for 4 full grown adults, extremely quiet when my 16 year old struts want to be.

Worst: Terrible car audio problems (i have great grounding points, yet i still here whine through the speakers...such a low end alternator...80amps) , no too much modification options (not just performance, i mean really any types of mods...there are a few but not more than a handful, the cars electrical can be a little funky sometimes. Expensive OEM parts...well it is still a Lexus afterall.

1997 ES300, every option available.

Best: Quiet, comfortable fatigue-free ride, wonderful construction and finish (black paint still looks outstanding; chrome wheels holding up), decent highway mileage, tolerates regular gas well (use premium in the mountains), excellent lights, and terrific tuner (I questioned the antenna embedded in the back window, but I can pull in long distance AM stations easily with no electrical interference at all). People love riding in my car to this day.

Worst: Lack of lateral support on leather seats in front (slip, sliding away), you can't fix the seat heater without getting new upholstery (what's up with that?) so only the passenger has a comfortable tushy now, AVS suspension system was great but costs $1600+ in struts alone to replace, and worst of all, having to rebuild the transmission at 90,000 miles. That sucked big-time.
