Driver side mirror
Hi all,
The driver side mirror of my 2000 Lexus ES300 got stolen. It costs $500.00 (if buy from Lexus dealer) to replace it. I wonder if there is a less expensive one somewhere I could purchase, and could I install it by myself.
I appreciate receiving your advice.
Thanks

make sure you look at pictures before you buy, You want the glass to look clear and not splotchy so you know the auto-dim is intact. EBay is good for this, and the sellers don't know these cars had a dimming mirror so the price is not bad. Buy one that is good condition and the color of your car, not worth repainting so buy the right one.
I have two matching spares in the basement, mostly for when the dimming glass goes. Just do not EVER test the dimming mirror function by hooking the wires directly to a power source off the car...burned a spare glass on that.

Thank you for the information everyone. Once I buy this part, will I be able to remove just the backing plate and mirror to place in my driver side housing by myself? I don't want to go through the trouble of replacing the entire housing and having to repaint it.

If it is only the glass, yes you can snap the new one right in. Make sure nothing was broken by the thieves stealing your mirror glass though...
To remove the glass from the used mirror, you push the top in so the glass is adjusted all the way "up" then you can get a screwdriver tip into the bottom slots to release the tabs. Then you tip the glass up and pull the top tabs out. Take your time till you feel out how it works. The below is for a Subaru but the procedure is the same except for the heat/dim wiring (on the ES it unplugs from insdie the mirror housing and is a real PITA to get unplugged)

Good info, the passengers glass will be cheap. The 00-01 cars have a dimming driver's side mirror, which is a few hundred $$ new, so best off buying that used. I have gotten whole used mirrors just to have a spare dimming glass for $50.
