It may be easier to put the car on a lift and come up on them from underneath and behind the powerplant.

Unless you've got extremely tiny hands, you'll probably end up getting frustrated, and having a mechanic do it. I was able to do the front 3 easily. The back was another story. I could only do one of them, and it took me quite a while to get it out. I've got all the tools you can imagine for the job, but it is just an extremely tight fit back there. You've either got to take things off to get to it, or have small hands- as I mentioned.

I ended up taking mine in to get the remaining 2 plugs changed...

It is not too hard to change the rear bank of plugs if you just remove the air plenum (4 bolts). Over all it took me about 3 hours to change them all.

i just used a flexible connector on my ratchet that I bought from autozone. I was able to get in there and get the job done in no time. Hope this helps.

i remember a member here "discovering" a way to save loads of time by removing something somewhere to get to the back 3. try doing a search and see if something comes up. maybe it was pcv? hey member, if it was you, say "ahh"

hey i knew it was hard but i didn't realize i wasn't alone
í felt like an idiot i spent 6 hours when my car was new and i didn't want to pull it apart
so i drove it ofr 3 years with the centre back plug left in 5 out of 6 not bad
lol now that i think of it i am an idiot
6 hours and 3 years lol
well atleast i know a tech at lexus who does work for me under the table shhhh don't tell anyone
he changed it for free
really nice guy
plus he did a water pump and timing belt change for $200 CAD
plus 100 for parts
sorry 500 more for a car wash and esspresso isn't worth it
i definatly like the manifold removal idea
it is so simple but so effective
thanks

It took me about 2 hours to change the rear three plugs on my 95 ES300. Only had to disconnect a couple of wires and one bracket to remove. I posted the procedure on this board someplace. I bought universal joints for my ratchet wrenches but did not need to use them.

For you 1MZ-FE 96 and up ES owners, the procedure is a little bit different from the 94-95 1MZ-FE. The rear bank does not have the 3 coilpacks over the rear bank of plugs. It's simply pop off the spark plug boot and change them out.

Default LETS CLEAR UP THIS THREAD

97 and up ES300's spark plugs are located on the other side of the engine (nearest to the firewall)...
You have to remove the entire intake... hoses and all in order to get to them
Once there it is still a tight place to work but can be done....and the flex connector metioned above would help...
But as for the "putting it on a lift and comming up from underneath and behind it".....Get REAL MAN....who the heck owns a lift in the first place!!!! and the plugs are on top of the engine ...how the hell would he get on top where the plugs are by comming from underneath ......DUH!!!

LOL...Not to mention that would be the first time I've heard of having to put your car on a lift to change the spark plugs...............LOL

Everyones got an answer....to bad not everyone knows about cars on this site....just cause you own a lex doesn't mean you know anything about automobiles....."put it on a lift".....Jesus Christ!.....!!

Same goes for all the other 1MZ-FE v6's starting from 1994.

Removing the intake isn't necessary as I've changed the rear plugs on my friend's '98 ES300 without removing the intake or manifold. The one nearest the passenger side (#1) can only be taken out from the passenger side, whereas the middle and driver's ones (#3 and #5) can be taken out from the driver's side. The only one I wasn't able to torque it to 13 ft-lbs was the passenger one, so I went by feel.

Default Maybe

Yeah that is probably true however, if you wanna knock it out without a hassle taking off the intake is ideal. That space is too cramped to do that ...at least i thought so ....
