Default Oil Mark Concern!

Hey folks it just came to my mind today about the oil dipstick and where the level should be.. I know this might sound ridiculous but thought I'd ask. I always do my own Oil changes and I purchase the 5 QT. container at Walmart 10W-30. When everything is complete by adding all the oil and new filter installed. I end up having the oil being past the second notch by a little bit and according to the manual it says any thing past 2nd mark is too full. So here is the wonder part is there still engine oil up at the top in the cam, or are these bottles not marked properly for their volume of oil. Lastly where do you folks usually get your marks to be safe... Any input would be greatly appreciated thank you.

When I change oil it takes full 5 qts and its right on the mark. Maybe make sure car is on level ground. Might start the car and let it idle to circulate oil into the oil filter, oil filter holds a bit of oil. Recheck oil level afterwards.

There are 5+ quart jugs, is it possible you bought one and did not realize it?

A little bit over is not an issue, don't sweat it. I usually leave about .5 of a quart in the jug and check my dipstick to see if I need to dump the rest of it.

You also may not have drained your oil completely or the oil was cold when you drained it.

No big deal

just how much can you overfill these motors? I've read where some people routinely put in 1/2qt more....

That's a good point Phil.. This time I was very **** & got this done right!! Oil mark was right below the 2nd notch. According to the book anything past 2nd mark is too full.

That is exactly what I did.. There is probably enough oil left over to fill a small cups worth.
