Default Just did my first Lexus oil change

And I'm glad I did. It had a Fram oil filter on it.

The oil filter was a bear to get off. I had one of those cap oil filter and it worked well enough. I had to put some torque on it to break it loose. Idiot grease monkeys leave their mark. I also had a time getting the new filter on. Not being able to see it makes it hard to align it properly but after a time I finally got it on.

Made a mess of the driveway. I miss judged where to place the drain pan and the initial stream hit the concrete behind it. The oil filter left another puddle. I soaped them up and rinsed them off after I finished but the stains will still be there.

She now has fresh full synthetic oil and a Bosch oil filter.

On a related note, is there any practical way flush the sludge from an engine? She has 188k on the clock so no doubt could use a good enema. I've always avoided those engine additives because they don't work and do more harm than good. Is there some engine flush that's generally considered safe and effective?

Thanks

BG44 if you can get it, or seafoam... flushes are ill-advised...

The inside of the oil cap was kinda groady.

Can you put Seafoam in the oil?

The synthetic oil has additives inside that will help break down the sludge. Change the oil and filter more frequently and that should help clean it up. Also change out your PCV valve and give the intake a good cleaning.

Always put a carpet or mat under the car when doing oil changes. I've done many oil changes at home, and every single time I manage to get some oil spilled on the driveway. The 1MZ-FE / 3MZ-FE engine does not have good drainage for the oil filter given its position, so when it leaks, it goes on the subframe, on the under-body panels, oil pan and makes a mess everywhere.

Went I first crawled under the car I thought "O *****, I've got an oil leak". But after changing the filter I realized where it had come from. The piece of carpet sounds like a good idea but I think I'll put a piece of plastic under it.

What's the best oil filter? I bought the Bosch because the only other choice was Fram. Is Bosch a good filter?

I haven't heard good things about Fram filters. Since I have two cars and tend to change oil every 6 months, I bought an OEM filter from Toyota, its only $2 more than a Fram.

I've had issues with the Fram filter not sealing properly and causing a mess after an oil change. Too bad Walmarts around here don't stock Purolator filters anymore.

Fram Ultra is one of the best filters on the market for the money.

Tearolator, I mean Purolator is having quality control issues right now. Many filters are tearing, and needless to say that's NOT good. I took all the tearolators off of my cars and put on Fram Ultra's (good for 15k miles).

Heck, even the FRAM orange can of death is better than purolator at the moment.

when it comes to oil filter i will only stick to OEM..infact a D3 type filter. its bit bigger than D1 filter. have been using it for like 5 oil filter change and no problem in engine. Just stick with OEM filter.

Honestly, if you're doing regular maintenance and its known that your car doesn't have current sludge issues any filter will do... but I just buy D1 filters from work. if you want to be on the safe side and aren't as frequent with oil changes just be sure to get one that has a oil bypass valve. Most low end filters do not have one of these which could lead to oil starvation in severe cases.

OEM on the filters.

Frequent changes for a while, don't flush.

Good luck.

In terms of removing the sludge, that's kinda what I've been up too in this thread, from post #19 downwards.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es3...service-2.html

In respect of changing oil. I have a really thick large beach towel which I used under the oil pan. Carpet would be better though. I've done hundreds of oil changes and it's only when the car is on a hoist that nothing ends up on the ground. It's just one of those things. although, .. sometimes if I'm really careful I can do it with not even a drop on the ground. But then I usually move the oil pan to fast and it sloshes, or something.

as above, the 1mz-fe oil filter is located in a place that makes a spill almost certain, but, if you drain the oil and leave it for ages ... it will come off without a drop being spilt.
