Is my lexus dead?
1998 Lexus ES300 218k miles. Today on the way to school my ES300 randomly popped out of gear. I wasn't able to get it in gear.(Not even 1st or 2nd when selecting manually). I put the car in neutral and pushed it forward. Car makes a screeching noise when put into park. I also noticed the speedo shows speed when I rev the engine. The ATF level is okay, however is a little reddish brown. Doesn't smell too burnt. Any chance of it being axles? Transmission seemed perfect before this ordeal. No hard shifts or popping out of gear.
Is the speed measured in the trans or after the trans for the ES300?

The final drive in your gearbox has failed, send broken pieces of metal through the gearbox, thats why you have that noise. Your car's transmission has failed, you will need to replace it to fix the car.
Sorry.

I noticed that I can move the car in park. Is there still a chance it might be the axles(Have not checked them since I am not home).

Yes, it could be a broken CV joint on either side. (or in the center). Sorry I should have started by saying it could be that too.
