The code clears and doesn't come back until i attempt to get the transmission to engage by revving the engine in reverse. The code is for the speed sensor, which i can't seem to find on the car. Would the speed sensor prevent any gear engagement and if so, where the heck is it?

Any suggestions, other than buy a new tranny, have this one rebuilt, or a bunch of lame jokes?
i think you lave out a small seal when you remove the valve body. This seal is at the top of the valve body . Thats why you are not moving you are loosing pressure. Remove the valve body and where it it touches the top of the trans there is a seal. Its probably damage .replace it . Apply vaselene on the seal so it would stay in position. You need some one to help you keep the valve body steady until it is bolted. Make sure you put the bolts in the right place.

I took my seal out and it seems okay. No wear, no damage to it. It did come off during re-installation of the valve body. I wonder if it was just in wrong? Would that make that much of a difference? Either way, I'm ordering a new one online. The part number is #35148-16010. I'm listing this because it was a nightmare finding it. I finally found it in a Toyota forum about the discrepancy between the service manual description and the actual parts list description.

My Lexus is back on the road.

I ended up having to replace the valve body's gaskets. One was damaged when I removed it. A co-worker told me that the gasket holes control the flow of transmission fluid, so if they are damaged or altered at all, it wouldn't shift. I ordered them here. They were only like $30 for the pair. I reassembled the valve body with the new gaskets and the transmission shifts well so far. I'll keep you posted if anything changes.

Okay, so I took my ES300 out for a spin and the shifting was intermittent. Eventually, D, 1 & 2 wouldn't offer a response. Reverse would, but after a little bit of a lull. I got the following codes when pressing the accelerator in drive:

P1705(Direct Clutch Speed Circuit Fault)

P0500(VSS MALFUNCTION)

This could possibly be related to the re-assembly of the valve body or something else. Could an ECU reset remedy this? Is that a good place to start?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I was able to clear the P1705 code and to this point, I have not been able to recreate it, which is good I suppose. The only code I'm getting, once I accelerate over about 2500 rpms is the P0500. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Good advice, months ago. I've finally listened. The ECU is on it's way.
