Was the filter always under pressure? Subaru and BMW love to have their filters at the top for easier access and clean up. I believe everything drains inside when you open it.

p.s.: I like the theory about the exhaust heating the oil. Never thought about it that way.

I've done a ferrari 308, they actually have a check valve so it drains most of the oil out, but it's messy because the filter sits upside down basically, the bottom of the filter is facing up.. but it wasn't as bad as my lexus's IMO

Same with benz too, they make oil changes very easy, esp with the cartridge, just need the special tool for em

Some subaru's are terrible, actually my original post in this thread is from a subaru lol, audi's were pretty bad too

These cars have literally the worse oil filter placement. Every time I do an oil change it's always a mess, no matter how I try placing the paper towels etc.

The worse thing about it is even after you think you cleaned up all the oil there's some that drips on the exhaust manifold and causes a burning smell for the next couple of miles...

I don't know why it is difficult? I just spray some brake cleaner / engine degreaser in that area.

My '08 Taco has the filter upside down, but it drains into a "cup" with a drain hole in the bottom so you need to put ANOTHER can below to catch the runoff! Crazy stuff.

It doesn't get everything clean because it pushes the oil with a propellant down to the oil pan/exhaust. To thoroughly clean the area you need a brush and a bottle of degreaser with a garden hose. Also recommend removing the splash shield around the crank pulley to get around the front bottom of the engine.

That's why we started this thread.

Tried the method of leaving the oil drain open for a few hours, I left it open for about 2 hours, and just went to the gym, it was still dripping a little bit when I got back

if you have the time, this method is great!
Pros:
No mess with oil filter (maybe a few drops at most? but I had no mess at all!)
No getting burned

Cons:
Time consuming
Pouring cold oil back into the jug to recycle really sucks :P

Thanks for reporting back with your results, this is definitely how I'm going to do it from now on. I usually like to let the car drain for a while anyway so this isn't much different. I'm just going to pull the plug on a Friday night and fill up on a Saturday morning.

You don't even have to do it that long, but yeah I think I'm going to use this method more now, simply because the oil filter making a mess pisses me off.. pouring cold oil to recycle is a pain, but not a big deal honestly.. just takes more newspapers and towels to clean up my drain pan, but it's damn nice not having to get dirty/risk of getting burnt off the manifold
