Starter for 2000 Es? Help
Guys...my starter is going bad in my 00 with 116k miles. A friend can get one from a junkyard from an 01 Es with 177k miles on the dash for $20. OEM is $240 plus my discount that would take off about 30% from that.
Or I can order a brand new, non OEM but im not sure which brands will hold up. Or would a 4runner starter be stronger like their alternators are in our cars.
I just dont want a headache and have to keep replacing it. Help me everyone

What makes you suspect your starter is gone? Here's a Denso rebuilt on Ebay but given your discount buying it locally at the dealer it comes out to about the same.

before you throw your money away at the dealer, Amazon has the Denso reman, as you know Denso is the OEM so it's the same part minus the Toyota part number.
$141.89 free shipping.
But I see that you are in Canada, not sure how that's gonna help you lol.
I already mentioned before, these denso starters are super easy to rebuild yourself, all you need is new contacts and a new plunger which can be had for around 20 bucks!.

Canada? Hell nah im in America lol.
Remanufactured? So it was used and re built??
Do mechanics usually change anything else along with the starter when they do that job?

Anywho, you should check with your dealer to see if what they are selling is new or reman.
if it's reman, then no sense getting it at the dealer when Amazon is much cheaper.
I don't know what else mechanics would change with this job, there really isn't any other gaskets and stuff.
Maybe change your airbox filter, since you need to remove the air box to get to the starter.
and a good opportunity to clean your MAF as well.

I also found that Denso reman. starter on Rock Auto with a $36 core refund. Why is Denso cheaper than other brands on Rock Auto? Isn't it the exact same thing as OEM from the dealer?

Remanufactured is generally less expensive because they use an existing core. What you buy from the dealer will have a sticker that says, "remanufactured for Toyota by Nippondenso". The new units on Rockauto and the like are inferior to a Denso reman IMO.

All the other brands are reman also on RockAuto but Denso is the cheapest..

So you think I should just replace the contacts and plunger on my current starter?! Do these always mess up and not the actual starter? I found this on Rock Auto..

If so it's a contact problem, the contacts and the plunger are worn.
this kit is better, http://www.ebay.com/itm/DENSO-STARTE...lV78FC&vxp=mtr
message the seller to get the right kit though.
Looks super easy to replace it too, just look for some videos on youtube.

It starts up on the first try but is a rougher start....not how it used to be. Not a smooth, luxury start.
It kept clicking forever but eventually started a couple of months ago but hasnt done that since. Just a one time thing.

if you got the time, why not try the contacts and plunger kit, I mean heck for this price if it fixes your problem great if not well it's not a ton of money down the drain and it'll give you practice removing the starter lol.
The biggest wear and tear parts in there are the contacts anyway.
