Brand for Cabin Filter?

Amazon.com: Denso 453-1002 First Time Fit Cabin Air Filter for select Lexus ES300 models: Automotive
the other brands usually do a crappy job filtering and not up to the same quality.
if you plan on changing it often then I guess it doesn't matter.

Buy Denso aftermarket, basically the same thing as what you would get from the dealer without the dealer price.

I recently put a Blitz reusable Cabin Air Filter in my friend's Honda Fit, I believe it's not charcoal, but it's washable.
Unfortunately there was no suitable fitting part for the ES300/Windom MCV20/21 made by a quality manufacturer that I could find (other than denso)

Would this work or is it Gen 4 only? It's pretty pricey either way

It's only pricey if you have to buy it at ebay prices and pay ridiculous shipping. Try find other sellers on the Internet.
If you know someone in Japan it's only 2,972 yen which comes out to about 25 bucks with the exchange rate.
you can see here:

I bought an Air Filter and for my 2000 ES300 and fits like OEM.

Activated Charcoal "cleans" by absorbing and neutralizing odors and gases. Activated Charcoal does not "freshen" by masking or coating the air with some fragrance as a scented Bounce dryer sheet or Glade air "fresheners" would.
Some people are very sensitive to odor/scent and for those individuals--including myself--the activated charcoal will definitely make a pronounced difference. To others, it may not make any difference and for those individuals they needn't purchase AC micro-filters; the regular NON-AC filters should suffice.
