Sorry for the tardy response, but to clarify something. If the indy mechanic put 10w30 and not 5w30 in your friend's car, and you live in Louisiana, he did them a favor, not a dis-service. Not sure what you mean by "Xw," but in fact 5w-30 is not the best oil for these in all places given the wide weather variety in the US, and definitely not in Louisiana. I run 10w30 in western Washington, summer or winter, for example. 5w-30 is a great "one size fits all" recommendation, but not necessarily the best for all places.

How much oil was your car using between oil changes or per 1k miles that necessitated the work? Kind of low miles for that much leakage it seems.

Xw30...
The X is the oil weight at cold start. The lower the number, the faster oil will reach the engine components at the cold start. Therefore, you want the lower X number. Therefore, 0W30 is better than 5W30. 5W30 is better than 10W30. 10W30 is better than 15W30.....
