97' ES PO330 Code - A Special Case
Hello everyone, I've been a longtime lurker on these boards for many years but never created an account.
To get to the point, recently my 97' ES was diagnosed with the all too common PO330 knock sensor code.
However, in my case the CEL goes on and off intermittently. When the light is on I have all classic symptoms of a bad knock sensor: increased fuel consumption, sluggish performance/poor acceleration, etc.. However when the light goes off my car runs like a dream with no problems whatsoever.
My question is this: If the knock sensors are malfunctioning wouldn't the CEL be on all the time? This leads me to believe that the wiring harness/wire may be damaged somehow and the problem may not be with the sensors themselves. I know there are many threads about this problem but I haven't seen one addressing this issue specifically.
What do you all think? All insight is greatly appreciated.

Most people replace the harnesses along with the Knock sensors from what I've read.
If you suspect a problem with the harness, you might as well replace those knock sensors while you're in there.
If you got only 1 CEL code and it points to those knock sensors, that's where I would start, change out the knock sensors and harnesses, clear the code and go from there.
The engine ECM detected a fault that usually means, High or Low voltage or a Malfunction in the circuit. The Factory service manual usually indicates how one can diagnose the circuit itself, but most people don't bother going that far.
