Hi Members,
I am new here and need your help. I am currently living in Wesley Chapel, FL (about 30 mins North of Tampa). The seals on my transmission are leaking and the local Lexus Dealer wants $2000 to replace all the external seals on my transmission.
My friend thinks I'm nuts and told me to take it to a local transmission place where they will do the same job for about $600. Should I do this or take it to the Lexus dealer? Also, does anyone know a good transmission place I can take my car to?
I really take care of my car (its in amazing shape), and have always taken my car to the local Lexus dealer for service, but $2000 is a lot of money!
Thanks for your help

I can't recommend any places in Florida to get the car serviced, but if the transmission shop does a lot of work on Toyota vehicles, and generally has a good reputation then I would go with them, UNLESS you have money to spend at the dealership. Many independent shops have equal if not better service than the dealership. Check the name of the shop on yelp and read reviews, google the business and read the reviews etc. All places have a few bad reviews, just don't take it to a place that has half the reviews negative.

Welcome aboard.
So is the dealer saying it is the Front Seal? That part is $17 dealer vs $6 after market.
The cost is labor. Let me tell you it is quite a task to remove the trans. I have pulled the trans 6 times, getting faster every time now down to 3.5 hours
Here is the thing, once they open it, they may find other stuff, like a frozen stator bushing on the Torque Converter shaft ( worse case ) but if it is a minor leak then most likely the front seal. A massive leak would be the bushing failure. Ask me how I know.
$600 is a damn good deal $2000 is excessive, Dealer must make their guys take many breaks to justify the time spent.
Post your estimate and we can see what is fluff and what is real.
