Trunk Door not opening for ES 300/1995
I have ES 300/1995 model. It was working good when I have purchased it at 133K. The trunk switch worked for a month and suddenly stopped opening. What could be the issue. I have taken to a mechanic and he says, it could be an earthing issue. I am able to open it using the key, but every time I need to turn off my car and hand over the key to the person who is needs his items to pick up from the trunk. So what need to be done.

1. in the glove compartment is a switch that cancels access to the trunk by the the trunk lid opener button in the cabin. Possibly this switch was pressed or hit while you or someone went in the glove compartment. The main purpose is to not allow access to the trunk by valets. The valet key won't open the trunk or the glove compartment. If the switch is extended, then that means the trunk opener system is not working. Push the button back in and you should be good to go.
2. check the fuse. if bad, replace it.
Look in your owners manual. If you don't have one, get one, they are <$20 from the dealer or can be obtained on ebay.
In the manual, look for "Trunk lid opener main switch".

I guess I'm a bit confused on this "earthing" issue you got from your mechanic, can you elaborate on that? One other thing that could explain the malfunctioning of the trunk release button is the fuse. Look into that. The owner's manual should show the locations of the fuse(s).

i have seen it and heard it before
steve got it dead on
it is the little yellow button on the left side of the glove box
when hit disables the driver door opener switch
i think the earthing issue is meant to be described as a grounding issue
