Default HID Headlight Ballast

Got an '02 ES300. Right side HID headlight ballast has gone out. Was told by dealer part number is 81107-33460. Cost $414. . Looked at after markets places to see if could find at lower cost. I am seeing several sites that are saying part number 85967-50020 will fit my ES. Can anyone verify this, or direct me to a place I can find the exact part at a lower cost. Thanks.

Use the dealer part number and search eBay, these ballasts are hard to find for some reason but they are on eBay.

You sure it's the ballast and not the Bulb?

How did you determine that?

I thought is was the bulb as well. I had them changed out a year ago by a dealer. I have a buddy who is the service manager so he basically did them for free. This time though he said it was not the bulb, but the ballast. So I guess the short answer is my local Lexus dealer determined it was the ballast.

The reason I asked, was that the problem is usually the bulb, and NOT the ballast.

When you say that it was changed at a dealer, was that a Lexus/Toyota dealer? If not, was an OE bulb used, or an aftermarket bulb?

Do you know how your friend came to the conclusion that it's the Ballast?

A blown fuse is another possibility.

The best way to determine the cause is to first make sure that the fuse is not blown, and than to interchange the left and right bulbs, and see what happends.

Just trying to save you from spending money on a Ballast, when the problem could possibly be elsewhere.

Phil

Yes, I had the local Lexus dealer change the bulbs in Dec. 2014. I had them change the bulbs because I absolutely detest fooling around with that retaining clip on the back of the housing. I did replace with aftermarket bulbs from Kensun.com. They were only $50.00 for a pair versus $140.00 per at dealer. What is happening is when light turn on the right side would light. It would stay on for appx. 30 seconds and then it would fade out. When I turned lights off and then back on it would do the same thing. Dealer pulled the aftermarket bulb out and showed me the back of the bulb. It looked like it had been burned.

Yes, the bulb was changed at the local Lexus dealers. I did that because I absolutely despise messing with those metal clips that hold the bulb in place. I can never get them back in correctly. I did use aftermarket bulbs from Kensun. What is happening is when the light come on the right side would fire normally. However, after appx. 30 second it would flicker and then fade out. if I turned the lights off and then back on it would fire up again, but would again flicker and fade after about 30 seconds. The friend, who is a service manager at the local Lexus dealer, told me initially that is was the bulb that was going out. But when he removed the old bulb is when he determined that it was the ballast. he even showed it to me. Looks like the connection has been burned. (See picture)
