Default 2002 P0440 Code, I can't find the EVAP Leak

From what I understand the P0440 (when by itself) signifies a large leak found in the evap system. I never smell gas, but I am consistently getting below 19mpg average (50/50 highway/city) I bought a new gas cap, but that didn't help, I checked all the hoses under the hood, seemed snug and not torn. What is my next step? I'm thinking about taking it in to a local Japanese car mechanic but I don't wanna get charged a lot for a fix that I could do myself.

From autocodes.com :

Possible causes
- Missing or loose fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
- EVAP system hose leaking
- Fuel tank leaking

Any ideas?

Relevant videos I watched on youtube:

(Gas cap)
(Gas filler neck)
(EVAP Charcol canister replacement? seems unlikely as I'm not getting P0442??)
(Leak near gas tank?)

instead of hunting and guessing, take it to a shop doing smoke check. That will quickly pinpoint the problem. Should be 60-80 bucks and free if they do the repairs.

Take a close look at the hose going into and top of your throttle body. due heat and age, that hose tends to get brittle and leak. That is how I found my evap issue.

+1 Smoke test is the best way to find leaks. You can go old skool, pick up a cheap cigar and blow into the hoses and find a leak that way. Did that on my 911, found couple of leaks.

I took it to the local mechanic, they said the p0440 code is the catalytic converter, they suggest a replacement for $650. I thought p0440 couldn't even be catalytic converter? Thoughts?
