Default Is the ES250 based on the Cressida?

Saw a picture of a 1990 Toyota Cressida and noticed it's similarity to my ES250. I always thought the Es was based largely on the Camry.

Cressida had Rear Wheel Drive and an inline (excellent!) 6 cylinder motor shared with the Supra.
Camry/Avalon/ES250,300,330,350,300h are Front Wheel Drive.

I remember the Cressida from the mid 80's. Were they still available in the states in the 90's? Regardless the Toyota design teams had common tastes.
