Tranny is pooched. Drove it to a shop and when we checked the fluid there it had a burnt odor to it. Internal surgeon required. On the brighter side found a u140e out of a 99 Solara with 45k for $400. A lot cheaper than 15 to 2k for a rebuild. Guy said I was fortunate to get the 280k out of it in the first place. Oh by the way I did confirm that the mounts weren't the issue before going to the shop but I thank you for all the suggestions. Post next week how the swap goes. Thanks again for all of you for your suggestions. Great site, eliminated a lot of possible causes and learnt a few things

OK, that doesn't make a lot of sense if your only issue was a "clunk" on shifting.
If you drove it to the shop with nothing worse than a shifting "clunk" - it doesn't mean the tranny is toast. The fluid might be toast from overheating or just running way too long (not sure if you had a complete swap or just drain/fill). But if the fluid had no grit in it from burned friction discs, I'd say someone isn't on top of their game in suggesting an immediate rebuild/replace. I'd disconnect the cooler lines, blow them out and and verify the cooling circuit is open. then I'd flush the whole thing and see how it runs after making sure an OE compatible filter was installed.
I would also look at the replacement filter and make sure it was the same wire mesh design as the original. I have seen issues in the past where the original mesh screen was replaced with a tighter cellulose/paper one and then starved the system. Make sure the replacement filter is identical to the OE mesh one, or flush the system and install the OE filter and see what happens. This has cured issues like this in the past.
280k is nothing on one of these well-built Aisin units if the fluid has been kept full and changed periodically. Nothing.

I picked up the car 2 years ago. Older couple drove to Florida every year. I drained and filled when I got it at 260k. The filter was the cellulose or whatever fiber as was the one I put in the other day. Didn't realize that wasn't OE. Also I only drained and filled this time. I've never done a complete flush before.

Usually when a tranny is in bad shape, a flush would make things worse. If the fluid is super dirty, that means parts of the tranny have worn enough to get metal shavings into the fluid. This happens so much so that the tranny relies on these metal shavings for gears to catch. Doing a flush could very likely lead to your tranny slipping.
