Default What causes filling problem at gas pump

2001 es300....I have to allow the gas to enter the tube slowly or it shuts the pump off. However if I rotate the nozzle 90 degrees it works.

That's interesting. I usually buy gas at Costco where they have an attendant to monitor the pumps and he has become quite an expert on such problems. He gave me the same advice about inserting the nozzle at "3:00 o'clock" to prevent early shut off on a Denali and it works. He said there were other car that required the same positioning. Just recently all the pump nozzles were changed and I wonder if that has changed things. It has something to do with the auto shutoff and the fuel venting of course - and apparently the temperature.

is it consistent no matter which station you fill at? if so I would say its a car issue, not a pump issue.

Cool, I had this problem on an '01 DeVille and an '02 Sienna at Costco - nearly the same fix, was 1 o'clock for me. Dunno if the AZ nozzles are the same as CA (doubtful, thanks CARB), but I started having more problems when they switched to the nozzles with less articulation where the head connects to the hose. Also, the newer ones with a compression nut holding the head to the hose can leak/spray gas when you twist them.

Problem is consistent regardless of gas station...

I found this...I assume the fix is probably the same for my es300.
