After my last post I had a canceled appointment and decided to poke around. With the cover pulled back, the sound definitely comes from the front most cam gear. I put a stethoscope on the idler inside where the bolt is and it’s loud, but I don’t have anything I compare it to. Put my finger in there and didn’t feel vibration

probably going to do as you described above, with an oem idler for good measure. Who makes the oem idler and tensioner and hydraulic

thanks a lot!

Also, while it was 59°f today wen I was working (2pm) I decided I couldn’t deal with a dirty engine bay anymore. Now it’s 21°f and snowing, low 12°f. Glad I did it

Bearings are made by Koyo.

BTW the timing belt noise for me was not there with a cold engine only hot.

Same here. Further reassurance. My solara did this as well, but quieter, come to think of it

Your Camry is beautiful. I’ve be thinking for a year or so I really want a classic yota. Either a late 80s very early 90’s Camry or Cressida, a late 60s trough mid 70s corona or crown, a JDM RHD import (cresta? Crown majesta? Century bench seat?) or a first gen Ls. If it’s a RWD earlier car, I might save my pennies and get a 1gz in it. Imagine a 2dr hard top corona with a v12 5 speed auto. Set up to be very quiet, not a race car. A true touring cruiser with like 400lbs of sound deadening, custom wooden wheel and interior pieces, stock looking wheels and just tasteful shaves here and there with a nice paint job... yea. Something like that! Or a cream puff 1987 Camry. The year I was born

I built this a few years ago. Soon it’s getting a frame graft - a restored 1967 camaro front suspension set up for a soft, smooth ride. It actually crossed my mind once to do a 1gz or a 3uz in that but i figured I’d stay Chevy

I had a very similar noise. My top idler was dry (no bearing grease). Replaced it with new one and noise went away.

Where the top cover and bottom cover meet, passenger side, you need to remove the nut (it was a few years back, and I believe it was a nut and not a bolt like the remaining ones) on the bottom cover and it will release the top cover. The top cover has one tab that the bottom cover goes over and is hidden.

Also, the gasket between the cover and back plate was torn & missing in several spots. I found a fair amount of fine road grit inside the cover. That grit, through time, may have caused the seal on the idler to fail and release the grease.
