I have a Dayco belt in my ES it got rid of the dreaded timing belt noise* (which sounds a bit like a bad roller bearing). Dayco idler/tensioner pulleys and water pumps are junk, avoid.

* timing belt noise is caused by a combination of the belt and old belt material stuck to the crank and cam gears. Cleaning the gears completely (oven cleaner works well) reduces the noise significantly but may not go away completely if you are using a Toyota or Mitsuboshi belt.

Get the Aisin timing belt component kit.

Thank you!

Traditionally I’ve used aisin but no one stocks it and i want to do it tomorrow. Sadly, if I go with them, I have to order online. I also wanted to avoid diving into it, then having to reassemble and wait for parts. If I remember, getting the timing belt cover off isn’t too bad on a 1mz.

Mine makas a noise noise but it gets better if I push on the cover where it goes around the front bank cam gears. But with a stethoscope, The sound seems to be coming from the V which is why I suspect the idler. I was thinking while I was in there I would change the hydraulic tensioner, tensioner pulley as well as the idler

Thank you for that, but I meant just the tensioner, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley… My timing belt and water pump were done about 16,000 miles ago

But are you saying that there’s a chance I’m gonna get in there and find that none of those three components are worn? That it’s just schmootz on my crank pulley cog

I see what you mean. Could always get something like this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/390743595637

Or search for these part numbers
13503-62030 (idler)
13505-20030 (tensioner)

I'd have to hear what it sounds like.

Thanks man. You’ve been super helpful and I really appreciate it.

Looks like to do what I want to do, it’s the WHOLE timing belt job I did the Honda Odyssey so this should be a breeze but still. Didn’t anticipate that. And unless I fire up my street rod and park it outside, in out in the elements doing this. Not fun

To

Two things I see... one is the front, upper timing cover can’t come off it the bottom one is on, which means both serpentine belts, crank pulley off. Two is it is possible to change out the hydraulic tensioner without doing anything else, but it’s blind faith that everything stays aligned

The sound is like almost a grinding. And - oddly - it gets much quieter if I put pressure on the front most (toward radiator) part of the upper timing cover as it goes around the cam gear

The fact that when I push on the cover, the sound lessons is rather concerning… Namely because that could be related to the thrust tolerance of the cam bearing, and in/out movement of the camp assembly… But as I said, with the stethoscope, the sound seems to be coming from the V, not the Cam cog area

That sounds very very similar to the noise I had. The sound lessens when you push on the cover because you are making a better seal cover to back plate.

The only way I got rid of the noise completely was by using a Dayco timing belt. I've been told replacing the crank and cam gears with new and putting in an OEM timing belt will also get rid of the noise. I know it sounds like bad bearings but it's not.

So do you think it’s a concern? I mean… This sounds awful to say, but redoing the timing belt, with all OEM parts including cam gear cogs and a crank pulley cog isn’t that much less money or work then swapping in a 60,000 mile replacement engine with a warranty, if it happened to fail. That doesn’t mean I’m not going to do the work, but it’s no longer on my list for next week...

The sound is not a concern yes it is nasty and sounds like something bad, it's not*. The gears are actually not that expensive.

*disclaimer: I am assuming you have timing belt noise. Diagnosing over the Internet is not 100% accurate

If I ever run across this again I will replace the gears, I've tried cleaning them it takes a lot of work plus the cleaner strips off the brass coating.

So I pinched the outer to inner covers together and the sound dramatically quieted down, eliminating the suspicion that the cam gear is moving in and out, which is awesome. I know internet or phono diagnostics are far from 100%. At some point I will eliminate any bearing for sure. Are we 100% that the upper front timing cover cant come off until the bottom one does? Also, if the sound drives me nuts, I'll get a tensioner, belt, and cogs. I can hear it ever so faintly in the car... with climate and radio off. I suppose my idea ride is a tesla.... I cant STAND sounds and shifts and such.

Funny story about when I got this car. Sold a "company car" that was in my name (2014 Avalon Hybrid) and walked off the lot with like $2100 in my pocket. This guy wanted $5,000 for my 02 ES300 with 104,500 miles. Timing belt done. First owner did it at 90k and ditched at 98,000. Probably becuase it had the ORIGINAL brakes (1.25% left lol) and a bad flex/Y/cat assembly. Fuel door broken, and this sound we are discussion. I got the car for $3200 because of it all. Everything but the sound is fixed, under $500. So assuming this sound is nothing, it makes it an even better deal but I feel bad that I explained my having to dive into the timing area plus the other stuff is why I would only give $3000. I did go up $200 though....

I hated the racket the timing belt was making out of place on such a nice car. There is no need to just take off just the upper timing cover that will get you no where. Been there done that. Replace or clean the gears/sprockets/pulleys whatever people want to call them, put in a Dayco timing belt OEM tensioner/idler no more noise.
