Good to hear it is settled.
I understand the fear/wariness of spring compressors. Wise to be careful. When I use them, I take two extra steps:
a) use them outdoors on a table or bench to minimize any collateral damage, and
b) Use two whole sets of them on the spring at the same time.. I have one set, and I still go to the LAPS and borrow another. More tedious to use, but an added safety margin I think worth it.

Rear struts I can do without a spring compressor, put the strut in a vice press down on the mount can get enough threads to start the nut.
